Altın Günü
Altın Günü, also known as Gold Day, is a gathering of women. On this day women get together to talk, eat, dance, and have fun.
Why is it called Gold Day? Because each guest brings gold coins for the hostess, one reason to participate in Altın Günü is to acquire money without having to take a loan from the bank. So after inviting a group of women, they draw lots and take turns going to each other’s places. If you’re in urgent need of money, you can ask to host first. Say you are a group of 10 women, then there will be 10 Altın Günüs, one each month, and each hostess will get 9 coins when it’s their turn to host.
During the event, women dedikodu (gossip), have nice teas and dishes, exchange recipes, and last but not least, göbek atmak (dancing).
This tradition is a day when women give each other a hand, and share a great time together, reflecting the warm atmosphere of Turkey’s society.
