Tennō Tanjōbi (The Emperor’s Birthday)

Japan is the oldest continuous monarchy in the world. The postwar constitution of 1946 states that the Emperor only has a symbolic function, meaning the emperor participates in ceremonies and diplomatic meetings, but has no effective political power. Even so, the emperor and the imperial family is considered a symbol of unity in Japan.

 

Tennō Tanjōbi- a Celebration o

Tennō Tanjōbi is a public holiday celebrated on the Emperor’s birthday. It was first celebrated in 1886 with Emperor Meiji, who was born on November 3rd. Today it is celebrated on February 23rd, Emperor Naruhito’s birthday.

 

Tennō Tanjōbi- a Celebration o

The Imperial Palace of Japan is open to the public twice a year: on the Emperor’s birthday and the Emperor’s New Year greetings. On Tennō Tanjōbi, people gather around the balcony of the palace with their Japanese flags to celebrate the emperor.
